Quick answer Our top walk, the adults-only pick, the family choice and where drinks and rides fit in

For most visitors, the Savannah Candlelit Ghost Walking Tour is the one to book. It is the highest-rated walk in our catalog with the most reviews, 4.9 from 3,542 travellers, and it runs 90 minutes by lantern light for $39 with four evening start times. Adults who want darker material should take the Dead of Night Adults-Only Ghost Walking Tour, which is 16 and over and leaves the kid-friendly stories out. Families with young children do better on the Fraidy Cat Family-Friendly Ghost Tour of Savannah, told playful rather than terrifying, with departures at 7 pm and 8 pm. If walking is the problem, the Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour with Andrew Low House Entry covers the squares by trolley and goes inside the Andrew Low House. And if the night needs a drink, the Haunted Savannah Pub Crawl and Historic District Ghost Tour stops at 3 to 5 pubs and is strictly 21 and over. Every tour in our catalog offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

Key takeaways

Ghost Tours in Savannah, GA Compared

We currently compare Savannah ghost tours from a $29.99 family walk to an $86 indoor ghost hunt. This page covers the whole spread of what travellers actually book in the Historic District: candlelit walks, a black night trolley, an adults-only route, two pub crawls, a paranormal investigation, a museum trolley and a daytime cemetery ride. All of them are sold through the booking platforms we track, which is how we keep prices, durations, ratings and age rules side by side. Hearse ghost tours and horse-drawn carriage ghost tours exist in Savannah too, but they are sold directly by the operators and not on those platforms, so they are not in the catalog. Nothing here claims to be the entire market. It is the part of it you can book, compare and cancel for free up to 24 hours before the start.

How to Choose a Ghost Tour in Savannah, GA

Your first night in Savannah

Start with the tour that shows you the Historic District and its ghosts in one go. The Savannah Candlelit Ghost Walking Tour spends 90 minutes moving through the squares, the moss-draped oaks and the cobblestone streets by lantern light. It is our editorial pick, rated 4.9 from 3,542 reviews, with departures at 7:00, 7:30, 9:00 and 9:30 pm.

If you want to rest your legs after a day of travel, the Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour with Andrew Low House Entry does the same squares from a seat.

Adults who want the darker stories

The family tours soften things on purpose. The Dead of Night Adults-Only Ghost Walking Tour does not: it is 16 and over, and the guide works through murder, betrayal and burial grounds in the late evening. It costs $34.99 for 90 minutes and is rated 4.4 from 2,579 reviews.

Know what you are buying, because the listing is honest about it. This is outdoor storytelling only, with entry into buildings and cemeteries excluded, and no ghost-hunting equipment.

Families with young children

The Fraidy Cat Family-Friendly Ghost Tour of Savannah was built for exactly this group. It takes all ages, rates children 0 to 5 in their own bracket, and tells cemetery lore and haunted mansion stories in a way the listing describes as playful rather than terrifying. It departs at 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm from the fountain in Columbia Square, welcomes strollers and leashed pets, and costs $29.99.

The Savannah Paranormal Trolley and Museum Tour is another all-ages option with a child rate for ages 3 to 12.

A ride instead of a walk

Not everyone wants 90 minutes on their feet in the evening humidity. Two catalog tours keep you seated most of the time. The Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour with Andrew Low House Entry is an 80-minute night trolley ride with guides in period costume, and the only walking is two short walks into buildings.

The Savannah Paranormal Trolley and Museum Tour rides the downtown squares and finishes with after-hours entry to the Savannah Paranormal Museum.

A drink in hand

Savannah lets you carry one alcoholic drink on the street in an open plastic cup, and two catalog tours build the whole night around it. The Haunted Savannah Pub Crawl and Historic District Ghost Tour meets at 7:30 pm in Madison Square and walks about 90 minutes between haunted sites with 3 to 5 pub stops, limited to 10 participants and strictly 21 and over. If your taste runs to real crimes rather than ghost legends, The Original Murder Tour: Savannah True Crime Pub Crawl covers serial killers, crimes of passion and unsolved cases with at least four bar stops.

A hands-on ghost hunt with equipment

Every walking tour here is storytelling. If you want to hold the gear yourself, book the Guided Paranormal Ghost Hunting Investigation at 416 W Liberty. It runs 1.5 hours inside a house on West Liberty Street with training on ghost-hunting equipment, EVP recording and a debrief at the end.

Groups are capped at 16 guests, children under 13 are not allowed, and it is the most expensive ticket in the catalog at $86. Bring a charged smartphone, because your own devices are welcome.

A daytime cemetery visit

Night ghost walks stay in the Historic District. Bonaventure Cemetery does not, and it is a different kind of Savannah experience, best seen in daylight. The Bonaventure Cemetery Golf Cart Guided Tour covers the grounds by golf cart in one hour, including the graves of Johnny Mercer and Conrad Aiken, for $38.

It takes all ages with infants on laps, but you need your own transport to the cemetery since no pickup is included.

Walking, Trolley, Hearse or Carriage?

Walking versus trolley

Walking is the better ghost tour in almost every case. You stand in the squares where the stories happen, you hear the guide clearly and you move at the pace of the telling. The candlelit walk and the adults-only route both cost less than the trolley options too.

Choose the trolley when legs, heat or rain make walking unwise, or when you want to go inside the Andrew Low House, which the Ghosts and Gravestones trolley includes. The trade-off some travellers note is narration that can be hard to hear at the back of the trolley.

Hearse ghost tours

Hearse ghost tours put you inside a real, restored hearse for a ride through the Historic District. They are sold directly by the hearse operator, not on the two booking platforms this site compares. That means no listing price, no rating and no free-cancellation terms we can verify, so they are not in the catalog.

If you want one, book with the operator and check their cancellation policy yourself.

Horse-drawn carriage ghost tours

Carriage ghost tours also exist in the Historic District and are sold directly by carriage companies. Neither booking platform this site compares lists a night carriage ghost tour, so none appears here and no price is given. The same advice applies.

Buy from the carriage company, ask about age rules and weather cancellations before you pay.

The Scariest Ghost Tours in Savannah

A quick honesty note first. Nothing in our catalog uses actors jumping out at you. Scary in Savannah means darker history and, in one case, standing inside a building with ghost-hunting equipment at night.

If you want a haunted house with screaming staff, that is a different product and not what these listings sell.

The adults-only Dead of Night walk

The Dead of Night Adults-Only Ghost Walking Tour is the darkest storytelling tour in the catalog. It is restricted to guests 16 and over, which alone changes the tone of the group. The 90-minute route works through murder, betrayal and burial grounds in the Historic District, material the family tours deliberately soften.

It is entirely outdoors, so no building or cemetery entry is included and no equipment is provided. It costs $34.99 and is rated 4.4 from 2,579 reviews.

The paranormal investigation at 416 W Liberty

For atmosphere you cannot get outdoors, book the Guided Paranormal Ghost Hunting Investigation at 416 W Liberty. You spend 1.5 hours inside the house on West Liberty Street, which the listing links to Revolutionary War battles and a triple-axe murder, with training on ghost-hunting equipment and EVP recording before a debrief. Children under 13 are not allowed and groups are capped at 16 guests, so the building stays quiet.

At $86 it is the most expensive ticket here, and it has 24 reviews so far.

The paranormal museum trolley

The Savannah Paranormal Trolley and Museum Tour splits the difference. A narrated trolley ride passes the downtown squares, and then the tour goes inside the Savannah Paranormal Museum for an after-hours visit. It takes all ages, so it is not a scare-fest, but the museum setting gives it a stronger paranormal flavour than a straight history ride.

It costs $52.43 and runs 90 minutes, returning to the museum at 415 W Boundary St.

Savannah Ghost Tours with Drinks

The open container rule

Savannah's Historic District lets you carry one alcoholic drink on the street in an open plastic cup of up to 16 ounces. No glass and no cans. Outside the district open containers stay banned, and public intoxication laws still apply everywhere.

Both crawls in our catalog are 21 and over with photo ID, and every drink is paid at the bar, never included in the ticket.

The haunted pub crawl

The Haunted Savannah Pub Crawl and Historic District Ghost Tour is the ghost-first option. It meets at 7:30 pm in Madison Square at Charlton and Bull Streets, then spends about 90 minutes walking between haunted sites with 3 to 5 pub stops, drinks carried along the street under the open container rule. The group is limited to 10 participants, which keeps it conversational.

Tickets are $35, it runs 2 hours, and it is rated 4.7 from 317 reviews. Some travellers wanted more ghost content and less bar time, so treat it as a social night with stories.

The true crime pub crawl

If ghosts are optional and real crimes are not, take The Original Murder Tour: Savannah True Crime Pub Crawl. A licensed local guide covers two hours of actual Savannah cases, serial killers, crimes of passion and unsolved murders, with at least four bar stops. It is 21 and over with ID, cocktails are bought at each bar, and it meets at Mint to Be Mojito Bar and Bites at 12 West State Street.

Tickets are $40 and the rating is 4.9 from 31 reviews, a small sample so far.

Family-Friendly Ghost Tours and Age Rules

Age rules in Savannah range from infants on laps to strict 21-and-over doors. The table lists the minimum age for every tour in the catalog, so you can cut the list in half before you look at prices. Remember that free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start applies to every tour here, which helps when a child changes their mind at dinner.

The Fraidy Cat family tour

The Fraidy Cat Family-Friendly Ghost Tour of Savannah is the one built from the ground up for children. It departs at 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm from the fountain in the centre of Columbia Square, runs 90 minutes to 2 hours, and tells cemetery lore, hidden burial grounds and haunted mansions in a way the listing promises will be playful rather than terrifying. Strollers and leashed pets are welcome, you may bring a drink, and it runs in all weather.

Tickets are $29.99 and the rating is 4.8 from 350 reviews. Adults chasing real scares should book the adults-only walk instead, as this one is not aiming at them.

Choosing for teenagers

Teenagers are the awkward middle. The 13-year-old is priced as an adult on the candlelit and family walks, but the Dead of Night tour needs guests to be at least 16. If your group has 13 to 15-year-olds, your best options are the Savannah Candlelit Ghost Walking Tour at night, which feels appropriately eerie without an age cap, or the Guided Paranormal Ghost Hunting Investigation at 416 W Liberty, which takes 13 and up and hands teenagers actual ghost-hunting equipment.

Older teens of 16 and up can graduate to the adults-only route with you.

The Haunted Places Savannah Ghost Tours Visit

Every Savannah ghost tour is really a walking route between a handful of places with heavy histories. Here is what the record says about the best known of them, and which catalog tours actually reach them.

Colonial Park Cemetery

Colonial Park Cemetery opened in 1750 and closed to burials in 1853. It covers about 6 acres at 200 Abercorn Street, holds an estimated 9,000 graves, and more than 700 victims of the 1820 yellow fever epidemic are buried here. Union soldiers camped in it after December 1864.

Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is buried here, and Major General Nathanael Greene lay in a vault from 1786 until his remains moved to Johnson Square in 1901. The Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour with Andrew Low House Entry names Colonial Park among its stops.

The Andrew Low House

The Andrew Low House stands at 329 Abercorn Street on Lafayette Square, built in 1849 to a design by architect John S. Norris. Andrew Low was the father-in-law of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. It is one of the few haunted sites in Savannah where a catalog tour goes inside rather than pausing at the gate.

The Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour with Andrew Low House Entry includes entry here, and the same trolley also enters the Perkins and Sons Ship Chandlery, a restored 19th-century shipping warehouse on River Street.

The Sorrel-Weed House

The Sorrel-Weed House at 6 West Harris Street on Madison Square was built between 1835 and 1840 for shipping merchant Francis Sorrel, whose wife Matilda died by suicide. The house later ran its own ghost tours and appeared on Ghost Hunters in 2005 and on BuzzFeed Unsolved. The popular "Molly" ghost story told about the house has no historical record behind it.

The house stands on Madison Square, where the haunted pub crawl meets.

The Mercer Williams House

The Mercer Williams House at 429 Bull Street on Monterey Square was built between 1860 and 1868 for General Hugh W. Mercer, although nobody named Mercer ever lived in it. Jim Williams bought it in 1969, and the 1981 shooting of Danny Hansford in the study became the story of the 1994 book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and its 1997 film. It is now a museum.

The Pirates' House

The Pirates' House at 20 East Broad Street has a Herb House section dating from 1734, one of the oldest buildings in Georgia. Robert Louis Stevenson placed Captain Flint's last days here in Treasure Island, published in 1883. The building is a restaurant today.

The Ghosts and Gravestones Trolley Tour with Andrew Low House Entry names the Pirates' House among its haunted sites.

Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery spreads over 160 acres on a bluff above the Wilmington River, southeast of downtown, a cemetery since 1846 and city-owned since 1907. It is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm with free entry, and holds the graves of songwriter Johnny Mercer, poet Conrad Aiken and the child remembered as Little Gracie Watson. The Bird Girl statue from the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil left in 1997 and now stands in the Telfair Museums' Jepson Center.

The Bonaventure Cemetery Golf Cart Guided Tour is the catalog tour that covers it.

Why Savannah Is Called America's Most Haunted City

The title, honestly explained

In 2002 the American Institute of Parapsychology held a conference in Savannah and named it America's Most Haunted City. Its founder, Andrew Nichols, called the title more honorary than scientific, and he was right to hedge. New Orleans, Charleston and other cities claim the same crown.

Treat it as a compliment to the atmosphere rather than a laboratory finding. The ghost stories are still the best way this city tells its own history.

The history behind the stories

The density of legend has a simple cause. Savannah was founded on 12 February 1733 by James Oglethorpe and the settlers of the ship Anne. The 1820 yellow fever epidemic killed so many that more than 700 of its victims are buried in Colonial Park Cemetery alone.

In December 1864 local authorities surrendered Savannah peacefully to Union troops, which saved the historic fabric that visitors walk through tonight. Old, dense and largely intact is exactly what a ghost story needs.

Twenty-two squares as a stage

The Oglethorpe Plan laid the city out around squares, and 22 of them survive in the historic downtown. That grid is the stage every ghost walk uses. Guides move from square to square, each with its own monument, mansion and story, and the Savannah Historic District became a National Historic Landmark in 1966, one of the largest in the United States.

You can read about the district at the National Park Service before you choose a route.

What Savannah Ghost Tours Cost

Every price below is the lowest adult rate on the listing. What matters as much as the price is what the ticket excludes, because in Savannah the exclusions are where costs hide. For general trip planning around your tour, the city's official visitor bureau is a useful starting point at Visit Savannah.

Tips are never included

Every single listing in the catalog excludes gratuities. Budget a tip per person on top of the ticket price, in cash or by card at the end, and treat it as part of the real cost of the tour rather than an extra.

Parking, drinks and museum entry

Three tours have costs beyond the ticket. The paranormal investigation has paid parking nearby, so factor that in if you drive. Both pub crawls exclude every drink, bought at each stop at bar prices.

The museum trolley excludes parking fees at the museum. In each case the ticket is genuinely the guide and the route, and everything you consume is yours to pay for.

Savannah Weather by Month for Ghost Tours

The chart gives the average afternoon high in Savannah (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Ghost tours start in the evening, a few degrees cooler, so the summer months still mean warm, sticky walks.

Best Time for a Ghost Tour in Savannah

The mild months

The best evenings for a 90-minute walk are October and November and March to May. Afternoon highs in April reach about 78°F (26°C) and in October about 79°F (26°C), and evenings run a few degrees cooler, which is when ghost tours start. These months also bring the lowest rain counts on the calendar, with roughly 6 to 7 rainy days a month, according to NOAA normals recorded at Savannah's airport.

Summer heat and storms

June to August is hot and wet. July averages a high of 92°F (33°C) and August 91°F (33°C), with June to August averaging about 12 rainy days a month. Evening walks still happen, and most tours run rain or shine unless the weather is severe, but you will be walking in warm, humid air with storms a real possibility.

Bring water. One popular walk has no bathroom stops in its 90 minutes, which matters more in summer than any other season.

Halloween and start times

Is Halloween a good time to visit Savannah? For ghost tours, it is the peak of the year. The atmosphere in October is the best of any month and several listings already carry a likely-to-sell-out flag, so book evening slots well ahead for that month.

On start times, earlier departures suit families and leave your evening free, while 9 pm and later slots feel darker and quieter on the squares. The candlelit walk offers 7:00, 7:30, 9:00 and 9:30 pm departures for exactly this reason.

Before You Go: Meeting Points and What to Bring

Every tour in the catalog meets on foot at a downtown location and none includes hotel pickup. The two exceptions are the Savannah Paranormal Museum trolley, which starts at 415 W Boundary St, and the Bonaventure Cemetery golf cart tour, where you drive into the cemetery yourself and take the second left, Mullryne Way, to the visitor lot by the river. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early everywhere.

  • Comfortable shoes, because the walking tours cover 90 minutes or more on brick and cobblestone
  • Water, especially in summer, since one walk has no bathroom stops in its full 90 minutes
  • Bug spray for warm evenings outdoors
  • A light rain layer, because most walks run rain or shine unless the weather is severe
  • Photo ID if you are 21 or over on either pub crawl, a passport or ID card works
  • A charged smartphone for the ghost hunt, where your own devices are welcome and used
  • Cash or card for tips, which no listing includes in the ticket
  • Time to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the listed start
  • A plastic cup only if you carry a street drink in the Historic District, no glass and no cans
  • A stroller is fine on the family tour and the candlelit walk, both listed as stroller friendly
